IndexNow vs Google Search Console: what each one actually does
They are often compared, but they solve different problems for different search engines. Here is what each tool does, where they overlap, and why you probably want both.

People ask whether IndexNow "replaces" Google Search Console. It does not, and the comparison is slightly the wrong shape — they operate on different search engines and answer different questions.
The one-line difference
IndexNow is a push protocol: your site tells participating search engines that a URL changed. Google Search Console is a diagnostic dashboard for one search engine: it tells you what Google thinks of your site, and includes a manual submission tool as a small part of that.
Coverage
This is the part that matters most and the part most comparisons skip.
- IndexNow reaches Bing, Yandex, Seznam.cz, Naver, Yep and Amazon — in one submission, via the shared endpoint.
- IndexNow does not reach Google. Google ran a trial and has said it is evaluating the protocol, but it does not currently participate.
- Search Console covers Google only. It has no bearing on Bing or anyone else.
So they are not alternatives. If you care about both Google and everyone else — and you should — you use both.
Submission behaviour
Search Console's URL Inspection tool lets you request indexing for one URL at a time, with a daily quota that is deliberately low. It is designed for spot-checking a specific page, not for keeping a catalogue fresh.
IndexNow accepts up to 10,000 URLs in a single request, with no dashboard and no manual step. That difference in design tells you what each is for: one is a diagnostic nudge, the other is a firehose meant to be automated.
What Search Console gives you that IndexNow never will
Search Console is a reporting tool first. It shows you which queries you appear for, your average position, crawl errors, mobile usability problems, Core Web Vitals, manual actions, and the specific reason a given page is excluded from the index. IndexNow returns an HTTP status code and nothing else. It has no idea whether your page was any good.
What IndexNow gives you that Search Console never will
Automation without a human, and coverage beyond Google. Once it is wired up, publishing a page notifies six search engines within seconds and nobody has to remember to do anything. There is no equivalent for Google — the Indexing API is restricted to job postings and live-streaming structured data, despite what a lot of blog posts imply.
The practical setup
- Verify your site in Google Search Console and in Bing Webmaster Tools. Both are free, and both give you diagnostics you cannot get elsewhere.
- Submit an XML sitemap to both. This remains the baseline discovery mechanism everywhere.
- Automate IndexNow so non-Google engines learn about changes immediately.
- Use Search Console's URL Inspection sparingly, for genuinely urgent single pages.
Is Bing worth the effort on its own?
More than the raw market-share figure suggests. Bing's index feeds DuckDuckGo and Yahoo, and — increasingly the interesting part — it underpins web results in several AI assistants, including Microsoft Copilot. As people ask assistants questions instead of typing queries, being current in Bing's index starts to affect whether you get cited in an answer, not just whether you appear on a results page.
