Does IndexNow actually work? A sceptical assessment

Setting aside the marketing on both sides: what IndexNow demonstrably does, what it demonstrably does not, and how to evaluate it for your own site.

We sell IndexNow automation, so treat this with appropriate scepticism — and then check the claims, because they are all verifiable.

What is straightforwardly true

  • The protocol exists and is live. Microsoft and Yandex launched it in October 2021. Bing, Yandex, Seznam.cz, Naver, Yep and Amazon participate.
  • Submissions are received. Bing Webmaster Tools reports IndexNow submissions in its own interface. You can verify this yourself, independently of any vendor.
  • It is free and open. No account, no quota to buy, no gatekeeper.
  • Discovery is faster. A submitted URL is known to the engine immediately, rather than whenever a crawler next arrives. This is definitionally true — it is what the protocol does.

What is not true, despite being widely claimed

  • "IndexNow improves your rankings." No. It is a discovery mechanism. Microsoft has been explicit that it is not a ranking factor.
  • "IndexNow gets you indexed." No. It gets you considered. The engine still applies its normal quality judgement, and thin or duplicate pages get declined exactly as before.
  • "It works with Google." No. Google does not participate.
  • "It guarantees indexing within X minutes." Nobody can guarantee that. Anyone selling a guarantee is selling something they cannot deliver.

The honest case for it

The value is narrow and real: it removes the discovery delay for roughly a third of global search, and for the AI assistants built on Bing's index. That is not transformative, and it is not nothing.

The clearest wins are where timing has value:

  • News and time-sensitive content, where being indexed a week late is being indexed for nothing
  • Ecommerce, where a stale price actively costs conversions
  • Job boards and listings sites, where the content expires
  • New sites that are crawled infrequently precisely because they are new

The weakest case is a stable brochure site that changes twice a year. The mechanism works, but there is nothing for it to do.

The honest case against it

  • Google is the majority of most people's search traffic, and IndexNow does not touch it.
  • Implemented badly, it can hurt you. Submitting unchanged URLs repeatedly gets you rate limited.
  • It fixes discovery, which may not be your bottleneck. If Search Console says "Crawled — currently not indexed", faster submission changes nothing at all.

That last point is the important one. Diagnose before you buy — including from us. If your pages are being crawled and rejected, no submission tool will help, and you should spend the money on the pages instead.

How to evaluate it yourself

  1. Establish a baseline. In Bing Webmaster Tools, note how long recent pages took to appear.
  2. Set it up and confirm submissions are being received in Bing's IndexNow report.
  3. Publish and time it. Note publication time, then check when the URL becomes known to Bing.
  4. Compare like with like. Similar page types on the same site, before and after. Do not compare a product page to a blog post.

You should see discovery move from days to hours or minutes. If you do not, something is misconfigured — check the response codes before concluding the protocol does not work.

The bottom line

IndexNow does exactly one thing, does it reliably, and that thing is worth having if your content changes and timing matters to you. It is not an SEO strategy. Anyone presenting it as one is overselling a plumbing improvement.

Frequently asked

Is IndexNow a ranking factor?

No. Microsoft has been explicit that it is not. It affects how quickly a URL is discovered, not how it ranks once indexed.

How quickly do pages get indexed with IndexNow?

Discovery is immediate. Indexing still depends on the engine's own judgement, and typically follows within minutes to hours for pages it considers worth indexing.

Is it worth it if most of my traffic is from Google?

Be honest about the maths. It will not affect your Google traffic. It is worth it if the non-Google third of search, and the AI assistants built on Bing, are worth something to you.
